Nina Ultra Pro Nail Lacquer “Never Glum Plum” – a muted mid-tone plum toned gray with a crème finish. Nina Ultra Pro has a warm spot in my heart. This brand is like the new and hip Sation. They’re affordable (suggested retail price $3.50), you can typically get away with doing a single coat, and the color selection covers everything you’re looking for. From what I’ve seen so far this brand is exclusively sold at Sally’s.
Muted green toned grays
Essie “Sew Psyched” – from the Essie Fall 2010 collection, a muted sage green with hidden silver micro shimmer. I was very pleased with this formula and found it to be smooth like butter. The suggested retail price for this bottle is $8.00 and can be found at Ulta,Essie.com, and many salons. Essie had one of the best fall 2010 collections this season.
Kicked up taupe
Ginger + Liz Colour Collection “Not on the First Date” – This fun taupe has a kick f lavender and hidden silver shimmer. The formula was great and I only needed two coats. G+L is vegan friendly, Big 3 free, fast drying, and long lasting. Ginger + Liz is a high-end nail lacquer will set you back about $12.00 and can be found at gingerandliz.com and select salons and retail stores.
Warm and frosty
China Glaze Nail Lacquer “Foxy” – a warm frosty red with brown and deep orange undertones and copper shimmer. Another brand with a warm spot in my heart for creating affordable ($3-$5 per bottle) and easy to find nail lacquers. If you’re big on keeping up with nail trends China Glaze is the company to go with. They’re always the first to release their collections. They also have a huge array of permanent colors for everyone.
Chocolaty browns
Revlon “Hot for Chocolate” – This is a warm rich dark chocolate brown. Dark browns are hot (no pun intended) this fall! “Hot for Chocolate” was released by Revlon as part of their fall nail polish collection. I’m always able to catch their new releases at Target for about $3.89. The formula was great but the application was another story. My bottle was full but I had to keep putting most of the brush and wand in the bottle to get the polish. I would think it has something to do with the wand being too short but it’s a little long. Very strange. At least the color is beautiful.
Deep blues
Orly “La Playa” – I stopped using Orly 10 years ago after buying a gorgeous pastel yellow and having a difficult and somewhat stressful application. I vowed to never buy Orly again. For the past year Orly has worked its way back into my collection and I’ve never been happier with them. “La Playa” is no exception and it also happens to be one of my favorite crème blues. It’s dark enough to be called navy blue, but not too dark where it could be confused for black. Almost like dark ultramarine blue. I’m in love.
I was really surprised by this color. I didn’t know OPI was doing a frosty pink this year and I’m not a fan of frost unless it’s done right. This color is very nice on the nails. It’s a really nice light pink frost with fine silver shimmer. I only needed two coats and the application was great. I only noticed a few nails with obviously brush strokes which isn’t bad for a frost. OPI “Pink of Hearts 2010” is limited edition and retails for $8.50 and is available at professional salons including ULTA, Trade Secret, and JC Penney.
Jitterbug – mid-tone grey chrome frost w/ silver micro glitter Bogie – plum frost w/ brown undertones and shimmer Hey Doll – rose frost w/ brown undertones and pale gold shimmer Foxy – frosty warm red w/ brown and deep orange undertones w/ copper shimmer Ingrid – cream brown w/ taupe and grey tones w/ copper micro glitter Swing Baby – molten taupe frost with silver micro glitter
Out of the two parts of this collection this one is by far my favorite and a must-have. “Foxy” is classic but new for me. My mom use to wear a bronze red that was something like this color but I’ve yet to find one close that I like ’til now. Ingrid is just as gorgeous as I thought it would be. Swing Baby is chic and Jitterbug will look even better with a matte top coat. The only color I didn’t care for was “Hey Doll’. I think it could have had more pink undertones. The formula was great…all I needed was two coats.
