What are your recommendations for girls transitioning from Miss Jessie’s BOGO sale?

Nothing.  Here’s the thing, I really like Miss Jessie’s styling products but I personally would not spend that much money on their hair care products because I don’t think that’s one of their stronger areas.  In fact, I started using Miss Jessie’s styling product while I was transitioning (a long with a host of other brands) and found it to be a waste of money until I was all natural.  Styling is one of the most frustrating parts about transitioning and you won’t find a miracle product on the market to kink up straight hair.  One thing to consider is that they do hold well, so you can purchase them now and use them later.

I can’t believe I haven’t done a natural hair post in so long—I was in a weave for months, something I never do.  I was starting to really miss my curls but not the ability to wake up and walk out the door and getting all the extra beauty rest a girl can have.  Before I got my last weave installed I stocked up on a lot of natural hair products because they were on sale or just because I really can’t fight the urge to not to buy stuff I really don’t need but truly want product junkie wall slides.

I bought SheaMoisture Curl Enhancing during the Walgreen’s Buy One Get One Free sale.  Since my hair got longer I started looking for products with more weight and thickness to them to add some weight to my curls to elongate them.  I have fine hair but I noticed that I love heavier products and the work just fine—so when I see words like “for thick hair” my eyes light up.

Curl Enhancing Smoothie is pretty unique (well for me it is because I don’t own anything like it).  It’s really thick; unless you read the instructions you’d probably think it was a hair masque or deep conditioning treatment.  Hard to imagine but it’s actually a leave-in styling cream.  The formula is almost perfect!  It defines the curls and does a great job clumping them together but it doesn’t do a great job at keeping them that way.  As my curls dried they started to separate, which is something that I’m sure a little gel or custard would have helped.  Funny, but while I was shopping in Target last night, I noticed the new SheaMoisture Curling Soufflé (which looks like SM’s version of Kinky-Curly Curling Custard)…so it seems like they’re on the right track.  Once my curls were completely dry my hair felt well moisturized but not greasy.  You’ll feel a hint of ‘butter’ (possibly form the coconut oil) on your hands, but no shine or oil.  I put my hair in a high ponytail (failing to brush my hair, hence the separation in the pics) and called it a day.

WEN Pomegranate Cleansing Conditioner is a universal cleanser designed to give all hair types the moisture and hydration they need to stay healthy, shiny and manageable. It is an incredibly rich, yet lightweight formula that thoroughly cleanses and also gives body, volume and a smooth, polished finish.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past few years, I’m sure you’ve heard of Chad Wen hair Products.  I remember how intrigued I was by Chaz Dean and his hair company one morning while I was watching an infomercial featuring Wen Hair Care.  The concept…while new to some if fairly common among others.  Instead of washing your hair with shampoos that contain harsh detergents, use a cleansing conditioner that will not only cleanse but keep your hair moisturized.

I’d have to agree with the description of the Pomegranate Cleansing Conditioner; it is universally friendly for most hair types and it’s not too light or too heavy.  You can easily use it in your daily routine.  It has a great amount of slip and detangling went off without a hitch.  It got my scalp nice and clean but I didn’t get the tingle (from the menthol) that I was hoping for.  Now the tingle isn’t an indication that it’s cleaning your scalp but it does feel good and helps with circulation.  It just wasn’t apparent when I used it.  Per the directions for my shoulder-length hair I should have used a minimum of 24 pumps of product.  That would have been a huge waste of product.  I used about 7, which was still too much.  I think it would be best to modify the directions or leave the “recommended amount” off the directions.  It’s also a bit of a turn-off to read the label of a hair product that recommends using over 20 pumps of product and as much as 40 pumps for long hair.

You can also use this cleansing cream as a leave-in conditioner, which I did and liked.  It didn’t do an amazing job at binding my curls but it did what it was intended to do and that was condition my hair.  I pinned my hair back and twisted it on the sides as a protective style for the week using a little Eco Styler Gel (with Olive Oil) and I didn’t experience any flaking or anything when it dried.  It’s good to know that it works well with other products.  Overall, I recommend the Pomegranate Cleansing Conditioner for the person looking to minimize and simplify their hair care routine.  It gets the job done and their product range is pretty impressive.  The graphics on the packaging could use a nice updated look but the product itself is really good.

Question:

Does it seem like there’s a “war” between naturals and those that relax their hair?

Image

Pros

Affordable

Cuts down detangling time.  I’m down to 2-3 minutes

Easily accessible and available in an array of colors

Works great at both detangling and styling hair

Doesn’t pull out hair, only a small amount of hair was in the tool

One of the BEST detangling tools I’ve used

Cons

Difficult to remove hair to cleanse.  Using a toothpick or dental pick with a hook works great.

Gripping with wet hands or products if problematic

Difficult to hold if you’re left-handed

If you follow me on Twitter you’ve seen me talking about Liv for the past couple of days.  It’s actually an old hair dressing/ conditioner that I affectionately refer to as the “predecessor to Blue Magic and African Pride”.  This hair dressing is thick and heavy.  Not only is California experiencing a few heavy storms but now we’re also dealing with wind.  Le sigh.  I needed a cheap product to use on twist-outs that would withstand the elements.  It got the job done plus some.  It’s a little oily and it’s heavy….in weight.  This is heavier than a whipped butter and the best way I can describe it is that it’s like a creamy hair balm.  Normally when I use a product to twist my hair it moves and sticks out in different directions.  This time it all pointed downwards.  I sprayed water (moisturizer) on my hair and used Liv to seal in the moisture.  My hair was the bomb.com the next day and shiny.  My hair feels so good.  I don’t plan on using it every night because I don’t want greasy hair and pillows–twice a week is good enough.  It even slicks down edges and smells like Nivea Body Lotion :: does the bank-head bounce ::  Now if I can only figure out what to do with all this product.  A little goes a long way and I know I won’t finish this jar.  They used to sell a smaller jar but of course that was a million years ago.

Do you guys remember Liv back in the day?  Did you use it?

With the experience and knowledge necessary to tackle most hair care concerns, Dr. Syed is passionate about helping individuals address everyday issues with their hair, such as the situation below:

I have naturally coily Type 4 hair. How often should I shampoo and condition?
When faced with the concern of how often one should shampoo and condition, Dr. Syed believes that it is all about how active one’s sebaceous glands are. Sebaceous glands in the skin emit oil, called sebum, which lubricates skin and hair. “The general observation is that the production levels of scalp oil by those with tightly-coiled hair textures typically require only weekly cleansing. A great majority of individuals choose to cleanse and condition every two weeks or so.” states Dr. Syed. With more natural styles, some individuals shampoo their hair on a more frequent basis, which is permissible, as long as the products being utilized are free of sulfates or if a co-washed is being used.
It is vital to determine a unique cleansing schedule that works best with your hair type. Devising a system of this nature will ultimately enable you to keep your hair healthy and strong.

This weekend I was chatting with Carm B. of Lipstick Fashion Mascara and Danielle the Style and Beauty Doctor about winter hair care tips.  Together we make up a group of women with very different natural hair stories but we all agree on the same things when it comes to our hair.

Just a little background about our hair…

I stopped using heat on my hair years ago and have 3c-4a, fine hair.

Carm did a big chop several years ago and has a huge thick ‘fro.

Danielle is doing a long term transition from relaxed to natural hair and this winter is rocking a nice weave as a protective style.

Put some moisture in the air with a humidifier—this inexpensive luxury isn’t just for stuffy noses.  Your hair (as well as skin) will thank you!  True be told, I run mine all night near my bed.  I bought it from Target years ago to help with a horrible cold and it’s been doing me right ever since.

Protect your hair from wool on hats, scarves, and coat collars. Yes, you’ll look fly and be warm & cozy but the friction from wool causes dryness and breakage—especially at the nape.

Too cold for a wash and go?  Opt for a dry twist-out. This will also create huge volume even for the finest of textures.  Since wet hair doesn’t readily absorb oils well now is the best time to use hair butters like KeraCare Buttercreme or Karen’s Body Beautiful Butter Love.

Don’t be afraid of a little water—as long as it’s laced with humectants. Look for ingredients like aloe and glycerin.  Try using Oyin Handmade “Greg Juice”, the original citrus-herbal hair mist. Also available in two other scents: Frank Juice, a frankincense and myrrh fragrance, and Juices & Berries with a fruity, juicy scent. This oil-free mixture of vegetable moisturizers and herbal essences is a great hydrator, moisturizer, refresher, and humectant. Spray on just before a shower – the natural humectants will help your hair draw and retain moisture

Kick up your scalp oils and balms. If you practice the hair tips above and you’ve been keeping yourself hydrated by drinking plenty of water, for the most part your scalp shouldn’t need a huge adjustment.  I take my existing scalp balms (such as Virgin Hair Fertilizer) and add a dash of rosemary and cayenne powder to stimulate growth.  Also try a hot oil treatment.

Protect your ends, seal in moisture, and be gentle to your hair.
